It is important to use the appropriate extinguisher for the type of substance that is burning (wood, oil, electrics, etc.) as shown by the classification below:

Class A: suitable for combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard and most plastics.

Class B: required when the fire involves flammable or combustible liquids such as petrol, kerosene, grease and oil.

Class C: best suited for fires involving electrical equipment such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets. NB: Never use water to extinguish class C fires!

Class D: for fires involving chemicals and combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium.

Class F: designed for fires that involve cooking oils, trans-fats or fats in cooking appliances that are typically found in restaurants.

Different extinguishing mediums are available for specific classes of fire which necessitates the assessment of the type of hazard in the particular area you are protecting in order to maximise the effectiveness of the extinguisher you are going to have available in a fire emergency.

Foam Fire Extinguishers with additive, have the effect of improving a water based extinguisher, enabling it to fight Class A and Class B fires.

DCP Fire Extinguishers  is a versatile powder extinguishant which is used to extinguish Class A (carbonaceous) fires achieved by sealing burning embers, it is also used on Class B (flammable liquid) fires and Class E (electrical) fires.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire Extinguishers is used on Class B (flammable liquid) fires. CO2 is safe to be used on live electrical fires. CO2 fire extinguishers are available in a variety of sizes with light weight aluminium cylinders.
